Finding your feet

Hey all,

This 1st post is some basic tips on what to do when you first start your survival world. Now in my Minecraft I almost always spawn close to the ocean, with at least 2 different biomes(environments) nearby. If this is the same case for you you should have access to a variety of materials from the get go.

If you spawn near trees start harvesting as much wood as you can (Look at a block and hold the left-mouse button till the block pops out). You should aim to get at least 10 wooden blocks but you can never have too much.

The next thing you want to do is make wooden planks from the wood so you can create a crafting table. Press E to open your inventory screen.

This is the screen you should see. What you want to do is click on the wooden logs in your toolbar and drag them up into the left side of the crafting area (It doesn't matter which square for this but to craft in future blocks may need to be arranged in a pattern). When the blocks are placed you should see a set of wooden planks appearing in the right square. Click an drag them back down into your inventory (To make this faster hold shift and click the icon, this makes the maximum amount of planks and puts them in the 1st space of your inventory)

The next stage is to create a crafting table. This item, when placed allows you to create all the items and appliances you'll need for the rest of your Minecraft adventure. To create one you'll need to fill each of the left squares in your crafting area. When it is crafted press E to exit your inventory and place it in front of you.

*HANDY HINT*
Use the place you put your crafting table as the place to build your 1st house :)

Now that you have the means to build tools you'll want to build a shelter to spend the night. Use the remainder of your wooden blocks from earlier to start building your house. An easy small home to build for any first time explorer is a 5x5x4 house meaning that at the bottom the house should be a 5 block square and that the walls are 4 blocks high (including a roof). For this small house you'll need 76 wooden planks in total and you should still have approximately 36 so go and harvest some more wood.

To place a block of wooden planks look at the spot you wish to use and right click. By building a small 5x5x4 shelter you'll have a 3x3x3 interior which is enough room to wait out the 1st night and expand in future.

When building the house don't bother to fill in the floor unless you gather too much wood whilst harvesting. A handy way to make use of space and fill up the floor is to submerge your crafting table by 1 block.

You can also use excess wood to craft a door for you small shelter by following this recipe on the crafting table.
*REMEMBER TO PLACE YOUR DOOR FROM THE OUTSIDE OR SKELETONS CAN SHOT INTO YOUR HOUSE*

So there you go for the time being you have a shelter to live in for the night. Will get another post up about what to do if you've still got the sun on your side or tips for at night, Till then take care everyone :D
